My Top 5 Tips to Reduce Seasonally Allergies Holistically

I've suffered from horrible seasonal allergies my entire life! Runny nose, sneezing uncontrollably, headache, sore throat, itchy eyes - its miserable. I've taken every allergy medicine that exists and found they all had deal breaker side effects.

Over the last few years, I've incorporated some of these holistic remedies to help with allergy relief. My allergies haven't disappeared, but they are way better than they used to be. Give them a try if you are an allergy sufferer!

1. Use a Neti Pot Every Day. If you only do one of these tips, this is the one big game changer! Nasal irrigation with a neti pot is an Ayurveda self care practice. It has really reduced many of my sinus allergy symptoms. Do do this you'll need a Neti Pot & neti pot salt. Both can be purchased on Amazon, choose a ceramic pot.

Fill your neti pot with warm water and about 1/2 tsp of the neti salt. Make sure the salt is dissolved. Tilt your head forward and put the pot up to one nostril and pour. The water will wash through your sinuses and flow out the other nostril. Its very strange at first - but you'll get used to it! This makes a mess so I do this in the shower.

2. Wash your clothes and hair after spending time outdoors. Pollen sticks to your hair and clothing. I find that just rinsing my hair off in the shower without shampoo works fine.

3. Eat local, raw honey. The theory here is that it desensitizes you to local pollens. Raw honey has other beneficial properties, such as throat and cough soothing, boosting immunity, and healing burns. Be sure you are buying local, raw honey - not the pasteurized honey commonly sold at the grocery store. You can find raw honey at your local health food store or at your farmer's market. I use about a teaspoon in herbal tea.

4. Drink Nettle Tea. Consuming nettle tea is thought to help with seasonal allergies. I will be trying this in the coming weeks.

5. Eat probiotics. Probiotics are "good bacteria" that live in your gut. Good gut health is essential to a healthy immune systems. I drink kombucha tea, eat miso, raw sauerkraut and kimchi to get my probiotics.

healthy costco haul!

Healthy, organic food... not the easiest thing to find where I live! I heard a semi-local Costco had a decent selection of healthy, organic grub so I went to check it out! Here are some of the highlights of items that are hard to find at my local grocery store. Yes, I filled my car trunk - I was really out of food & bulk buying actually saves $$!

Dates
I love Medjool dates for raw desserts & fueling workouts. Big box of dates for $8.79 - not bad.

Quinoa4lbs - presoaked - 4 lbs for 18.99 - thats the cheapest I’ve been able to find it! Expect some quinoa recipes here soon.

Organic Brown Rice
$13.99 for 5 lbs. This is a staple for me. I make a big batch and eat with soups and stir fries.

Organic Berry Blend
This is what I went to Costco for. Huge bag of frozen berries (blueberries, cherries, pomegranate, strawberries, raspberries) and its organic too. $10.49 for a big bag. Perfect for throwing in smoothies every morning!

Hemp Hearts
Love these for smoothies and salad & oatmeal toppers. Hemp is a complete protein.  I usually order these from Amazon, so I was happy to see them & at a reasonable price.

Raw Almonds
3 lb bag for $14.99. Use these for homemade almond milk (so much cheaper and healthier without preservatives and sweetener) & granola & trail mixes.

*They also had chia seeds, but I didn’t need any.
**This Costco was in Pottstown, PA.

My faves :: podcasts

I love to listen to podcasts while going on long runs and walks, while doing tedious chores around the house & when traveling. Here are some of my current favorites

This interview-style podcast is hosted by Rich Roll: vegan, ultra-marathoner, author. Rich’s story is pretty inspiring (check out his book “Finding Ultra”) & he gets amazing guests by Joe Cross and Dr. Frank Lipman. I like the pace and length of the podcast - it usually runs 1 - 1.5 hours. Topics center around wellness and includes exercise, nutrition, functional medicine, inspiring life stories, meditation and plant power.

Hosted by Matt Frazier of the No Meat Athlete Blog (if you are a runner or triathlete and are interested in nutrition/fueling your runs, check out the blog). Topics include vegan cooking, nutrition & lifestyle as well as race training and recaps.

I am new to this podcast, but am loving it! Basically anything related to holistic health is covered - exercise, nutrition, eco-living, meditation, health issues, you name it. A recent episode I like was “holistic solutions to everyday problems.”

People love to hate her, but I love her! Her well-produced podcast centers around fitness, diet and overall happiness.

I’m always on the lookout for new podcasts to fill my ipod with... What are your favorites?
